TANJIL RIVER - UPPER WEST BRANCH

Tanjil River – Upper West Branch

Strahan rd to Baw Baw tourist Rd

The Tanjil spills of Mt Baw Baw, and starts its journey with a large waterfall approx. 10m high. You can hike to the falls from Tanjil Bren – approx. 5km hike, but the waterfall is unrunnable.

Put in for the river run is on the Strahan rd just above the bridge crossing on the Baw Baw Tourist rd. Walk in approx. 1km for the start of a nice mountain stream and crystal clear waters. The trip to the bridge has some great grade 1 to 2 gravel races and wave trains. At the bridge is the first drop which would be a 3 at higher water and contains some strainers. Still runnable or portage on the right.

Below the bridge its easiest to continue along for approx. 2km to get the best the river has to offer. High altitude rain forest and boulder drops. There are numerous 3, 3+ rapids which could easily be 4 in higher water. A great technical run.

The hike out is straight up the mud cliff, rd side to the baw baw rd, at about 4km below the bridge. You can also choose to walk up one of the many creeks that come off the side to make the ascent easier. The river veers away from the road after this and the next take out would be at Simpsons rd, many miles away. The river also changes to mainly flater moving water at this point, with lots of willows and trees.
