TAMBO RIVER

ambo River: Battle Point  to Old Coach Road

South East Gippsland, Swifts Creek.

Class: II+ to III

Description:  Rapids or drops followed by pools or moving water. The River is fairly shallow, with a few willows and trees. No major problems with trees or willows in the river, most of the Lines were clean. The river Rises and drops very quickly, so if you want to paddle it, you will need to be there when it is raining or just after a heavy rain.

There are a few nice surfable waves and some slightly larger drops. All in all, it’s a nice paddle in a scenic valley.

The put in at Battle Point is easy and well defined, with a bridge crossing the river. The take out at the Old coach rd, similarly has a bridge crossing. The distance is about 7kms but there is also the opportunity to put in higher up, around 20km further up towards Swifts Creek, at a recreational access point. However, the length of the paddle increases exponentially, with a lot more flat/ moving water at the start. It also allows for access to some of the bigger rapids along the way. Many of the Rapids can be seen from the road as the road follows the river for most of the way.

River Level : Above 2.5m. The gauge is Tambo river at Swifts Creek
