MITTA MITTA RIVER
Mitta Mitta River( Upper): Bundarra Bridge to Hinnomunjie Bridge
NE Victoria. Approx 120km Nth of Bairnsdale
Class: III - IV
Length: 16km
Level: Best above 1m @ Hinnomunjie Bridge gauge
Description: Grade 3-4 River Run in steep sided valley and semi gorge. Great Scenery and one of Victorias larger volume rivers when above 1.2m. The Character of the rapids changes a bit between the different water levels, and various eddys and features can be quite different between even 1.3m and 1.4m on the gauge. Usually the Mitta flows best towards the end of the snow season, but localized heavy rain can bring the river up quite fast as it has a large catchment. The rapids start immediately after the put in and there a enough rapids along the way to keep everyone on their toes.
According to Adventure Pro ‘Bump and Grind’ , ‘Graveyard’ (can be class IV) and ‘Dislocation’ can be quite entertaining. If the first few rapids are too much, there is an exit point at Black Duck Hole. It is a steep climb, but after this you are committed to the rest of the run, including the gorge section and also ‘The Waterfall’ and ‘the Gobbler’. There is a huge array of playspots, and great whitewater should you decide to run the whole section. At 1.2m the run takes 3-4 hours, but the shuttle from Bundarra to Hinnomunjie is about 40min each way. Don’t run the river if you don’t have good whitewater skills, especially above 1,8m when the rapids are quite large and engulfing.
Putting In: From Melbourne follow the Princess Highway east for 277km to Bairnsdale and then Nth on the Omeo Highway, through Omeo for 150 km. About 30km out of Omeo you’ll come to a place called Anglers Rest, 2km after this Bundarra Bridge, just after the bridge on the right you will find a turn of to a picnic area and the Put in.
Taking Out: Follow the Omeo Highway back toward Omeo, just over 10km before Omeo the
Bingo Connection Rd appears on the left. Follow this down to the Omeo Valley Road turn
left and follow this to Hinnomunjie Bridge. The take out is on river left just down stream just
downstream of the bridge.
