KING RIVER
This section of the King is by far the best and most continuous whitewater, with the most reliable catchment. The Rapids are consistent 2-3 with the first two drops being two of the biggest. The river has numerous play spot and surf waves, and you can easily spend a couple of hours playing everywhere along the way.
The shuttle is short and on a bitumen rd, approx 3 km. If you dont have a shuttle you can easily walk back to the start to retrieve your car. As the run takes betwen 30min to 3 hours depending on the group and amount of play time, you can do the run more than once in a day.
The river is dam controlled, but frequently flows over the spillway – an awesome sight at the put in. The spillway should not be run. The river is clear and cold, can rise very quickly with rain or dam release. Best to be paddled above 1.3, but anything above 1.8m is a wild ride. The waves become huge and fast to surf. Well worth a go, but not for the faint-hearted. Below 1.0m the river becomes quite bony and easier for beginners. The weir, which is the second major drop should be scouted at every level.
Put in is at the parking lot below the dam on Lake William Hovell on the King RIver Rd, from Cheshunt. There are facilities availble at the parking lot above the dam, but not at the put in. The take out is back towards Cheshunt, and is at an open area where the river meets the rd. The Entire Run is only about 5km in tota
